Inspired by The Fabrication Series “Cheap DIY Downdraft Grinding Table”, I designed and built my own (build video below).

Design requirements:

1. “Bench” so I can sit at it and weld there
2. Two common 21.5″ box fans
3. Two common 20×20 furnace filters
4. Easily replaceable filters
5. Locking casters so I can move it
6. Raised back to catch debris
7. Ducting to funnel debris to bottom
8. Flip-down sides for longer material
9. “Trap Door” or “Drawer” on the bottom to remove debris
10. Outlet for grinders
11. Rubber mat to “hold” material

It wasn’t that cheap, but I used a lot of new materials instead of scrap.  We’re around $800CDN (2026), which I guess is pretty much the same cost as The Fabrication Series table (2019).

Anti-fatigue mat sitting on “flat” expanded metal

“Lift-out” grate for support.  I can set my old welding table top right on top of this.
