Art Metal students are finishing off their projects for the
year, their final two being of their own choice, from ring casting, to sculptures, to wrought-iron
furniture. We did a bit of Cuttlefish Bone Pewter casting, which turned out pretty good - some
excellent castings done!
Mechanics 10 students have finished engines and fuel systems, and will be starting ignition, cooling and brake systems shortly.
Electronics students are finishing their projects for the year. Level 1 are finishing the 10 LED sequencer, Level 2 are finishing the 555 project, and Level 3 are refining their battle bots for the Competition next month!
Technology students are refining their drag boats for the race this month. Students designed and built a boat hull out of styrofoam, and a propeller out of ABS plastic, attached an electric motor tethered to suspended cables and run through a 5" plastic pipe sawn in half. Very exciting! I hope to have pictures soon!
Power Mechanics students have finished the 4 stroke lab and are completing the 2 stroke lab, and soon will be building the CO2 Dragsters for competition in the last week of classes! Again, pictures soon!
The Sinister Sentra Project
April 07 I drove to Vancouver to compete in the BCMA closed club #1. I placed first, but really didn't have much competition and did not run very fast. I am still adjusting to the car, and spun a number of times on course - too much oversteer!
April 14 I ran the Autocross Outlaws Team Modified class at Sun Valley Motor Speedway and placed 6th, despite some wicked oversteer. Due to unfortunate relationships between the race track and the municipality, these events are postponed indefinately.
April 28 Again I drove to Vancouver and ran the second BCMA closed club, where I took third succumbing to overdriving some corners and the dreaded oversteer again.
May 05 I ran the CACC Championship Series #1 event, hosted by VCMC. My first two runs were horrid - again I spun out twice, overdrove many turns, and was placing dead last in F/SS. On my third run I forced myself to be as smooth as possible, not upset the balance of the car, not dive too hot into corners, and try to put down a good clean run. With this run I went from dead last to leading the class by 1.5 seconds, being 8th overall (indexed), and took a first place trophy home with me!
I had a number of people comment that it looked like the Sentra was hitting the snubbers and throwing the car around. I couldn't feel it, but I am investigating the suspension to determine what can be done to correct the situation. It is confirmed, however, that the front suspension is too low, and too soft at the moment. I will provide more information on this as I go.
The next event, CACC Championship Series #2 (VCMC), will be held on June 02 at Boundary Bay airport, Ladner BC. See you there!
