May 2001

April has now blinked (blunk?) by super quick, and now from here on up, it's all downhill. Students are frantically working on their final projects in anticipation of the end of the year.

After playing with a Street Luge last month and having great fun, I figured I'd have a shot at skateboarding. A friend of mine makes custom downhill boards, and I picked one up from him. Figured it should be easy. I snowboard, how difficult could it be?

I went over to BCIT to learn how to ride this thing. Worked my way slowly up one of the hills there. Nice in that there was very little traffic, I was able to spend about 3 or 4 hours learning.

Braking eludes me. The theory is to drag a foot on the ground to scrub off some speed. When the BCIT security truck came around the corner at the bottom of the hill, I tried to slow down. I gingerely placed one foot on the ground to scrub some speed. This foot aparently stopped too well. I was initially surprized at how well I could keep up, ...until I discovered that I wasn't always hitting the ground with each footfall.

Then everything went into slow motion, and I started to wish I had brought some gloves.

Then I wished I had knee pads and elbow pads too.....

Just like when I started snowboarding, as you're lying there in a crumpled heap of ripped clothing, missing skin and bleeding hands, you're thinking "you know, I've almost got the hang of this.... When all the skin grows back, I'll try it again.

By the way, for a crazy flash file (caution, it's a bit violent), click HERE. It's a stick man doing some crazy kick-boxing martial arts/matrix kinda thing.

Not much new here. Went to a few practice events and was pleasantly surprized with the performance. The season begins May 05, so I will be posting results in the Results page.

I will also be trying Solo I - high speed autocross. I am a bit nervous about it, as I am afraid of damaging the car (any more than it is). I will post more about this next month, as the first Solo I event is May 05.
